Colorado Medical Marijuana Laws ~ Denver, Colorado

In November 2000, voters in the state of Colorado legalized marijuana for medical uses for “persons suffering from debilitating medical conditions.”

Medical use includes the ability to acquire, possess, use, and transport medical marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia.

A “patient” is defined as someone who has a debilitating medical condition that qualifies for medical marijuana use.

A “physician” is defined as a doctor of medicine who is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Colorado.

A “primary caregiver” is defined as the person other than the patient or the patient’s physician who has significant responsibility for taking care of the medical needs and well-being of the patient.

A “registry identification card” is defined as the document issued by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) that legalizes the use of medical marijuana. It costs $90 per year to obtain and maintain a medical marijuana registry card.

“Useable form of marijuana” includes the leaves, buds, flowers, and seeds of cannabis plants.

A patient’s medical use of marijuana is limited to no more than 2 ounces of a usable form of marijuana.

Please note that these Colorado medical marijuana laws apply to “adult patients,” defined as anyone over the age of eighteen. While medical marijuana is available to minors, the laws are even more stringent.
